GREEN with Greenmun
So, what does planting on a roof and last weeks heat wave have in common? CBS evening news recently covered the heat wave.
In New York, the overnight low was 77 degrees while an hour away it was a cool 60. Boston was 74 while suburban Andover, Mass., was 61. Washington, D.C., dipped to 77 while nearby Alexandria, Va., dropped to 69. This tells professionals there is not enough needed green space to cool our cities. "Urban heat island effect" is when the buildings, rooftops and streets in our cities absorb and trap heat. Combine this with air conditioner heat and traffic and even body heat we are creating our own personal sauna. What can be done?
According to Columbia University's Stuart Gaffin we can create green roofs. Utilizing these spaces can allow us to grow gardens, vegetables and plants. Gaffin says in NYC alone there is enough roof space where gardens could do the work of 20 tree filled central parks! AMAZING!
